Ecstatic dance is more than just moving to music—it's a journey of self-discovery, connection, and transformation. Here’s how a typical session might flow, incorporating different elements like a cacao ceremony, a singing circle, the dance itself, and a closing sound bath:
Introduction: The session often begins with a sacred cacao ceremony. Cacao, known as the "food of the gods," is a powerful plant medicine used for centuries to open the heart and connect deeply with oneself and others.
Process: Participants gather in a circle, and the facilitator guides them through the preparation and drinking of the cacao. During this time, intentions are set, creating a collective energy focused on love, healing, and connection.
Purpose: The cacao helps to open the heart, making participants more receptive to the energy and emotions that will flow during the dance.
Introduction: After the cacao ceremony, a singing circle often takes place. This is a time for participants to use their voices as a tool for expression, healing, and unity.
Process: The facilitator may lead the group in chanting or singing simple, repetitive songs or mantras. This practice allows participants to harmonize with each other, creating a sense of community and shared purpose.
Purpose: Singing together helps to ground the energy of the group and prepares everyone for the journey of ecstatic dance by creating a collective vibration
Introduction: The heart of the session is the ecstatic dance itself, where participants are encouraged to move freely and authentically.
Process: Music is played in waves, starting slow to allow participants to ease into movement, building up to more energetic rhythms, and then gradually returning to stillness. There is no choreography—participants are free to let their bodies move in whatever way feels right in the moment.
Purpose: Ecstatic dance is a practice of letting go, of moving without judgment, and of connecting to the inner self and others through the universal language of dance.
Introduction: The session often concludes with a sound bath, which helps to integrate the experience and bring participants back to a state of calm and relaxation.
Process: Participants lie down and close their eyes as the facilitator plays various instruments such as singing bowls, gongs, or chimes. The vibrations from the sound help to release any remaining tension and facilitate deep relaxation.
Purpose: The sound bath serves as a gentle landing after the intensity of the dance, helping participants to absorb the experience and leave the session feeling peaceful and grounded.
